Forest fires rage in France and evacuations continue

 Forest fires raged in southwestern France on Saturday, with fires consuming about 100 square kilometers in the Gironde region, up from 73 square kilometers on Friday.

Authorities in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Gironde provinces said in a statement that more than 12,200 people had been evacuated from the affected area by Saturday morning, while more than 1,000 firefighters were trying to control the fires.

"Due to the weather conditions and the risk of fires , the authorities have temporarily blocked access to the forest area for the purpose of practicing professional and recreational activities," the statement read.
